Alberta Campaign

The Alberta Government indicates they intend to opt out of Pharmacare, a federal program that would give people in Alberta universal access to free prescription birth control, diabetes medications and glucose monitoring.

We are advocating for the adoption of Pharmacare in Alberta to ensure Albertans have the same access to birth control and other vital medications as all other Canadians.

83% of Albertans approve of a free contraceptives policy

Why Should Alberta say yes to Pharmacare and free Birth Control?

  • Prevention saves lives and money! Direct health care costs alone of unintended pregnancies in Alberta is estimated to be $40 Million dollars. With the current affordability crisis, many Albertans are struggling with the costs of their medications. Providing free diabetes medications and contraception, keeps people healthier and out of hospital, and lessens the strain on our health care system.

  • The Alberta Health Minister says 76% of Albertans have coverage. That mean 1 in 4 Albertans are responsible for ALL the costs of their medications. Other Albertans may have a program that pays for SOME but not ALL their medications. With deductables, co-pays, spending limits and incomplete coverage, many Albertas still struggle with the costs of their medications. Some even ration their medications to save money. You must earn less than $16580 to be eligible for Alberta Health Benefit. That is half the minimum wage, so any working Albertan would not be eligible.

  • Albertans just want the benefits that every other Canadian is getting - universal access to free medications for diabetes and prescription contraception.
